There is a lovely country ... that country is still lovely, because the
sea waves so blue frolic, it is mentioned in the Danish national
anthem. This was written in 1819. At that time one would say that
Denmark is united and not divided by the sea surrounding our country.
Consisting of 392 islands in addition to the
mainland Jutland, ships and the sea have always been a key part of Denmark
and Danish culture. However, the ferries and passenger ships that for
generations have connected the different parts of Denmark are to an ever
increasing extend replaced by bridges.
In 2001, the Danish Ferry Preservation
Society was formed. Our aim is to preserve the Danish ferry heritage for
future generations by founding a Danish ferry museum.
Today, this dream is close to becoming
reality. Our goal is to preserve the classic Danish ferry Dronning Ingrid,
built in 1951, and use this wonderful ship as a museum in Gedser.
